Let's talk about The Good Wife

I’ve been holding off making this post, because I didn’t want to admit it out loud, but I've been slowly falling out of love with this show. My recaps were originally written out of an excitement for something we don’t often get on television (namely, an all-female crime-fighting duo), but that’s starting to fade and it’s killing my inspiration. What this show was originally about has quietly shifted over the past season, and I am far less enthusiastic about this new direction. Which is really saying something, when you’ve got Kalinda being this gay:

Kalinda, Alicia, Cary and all my other favourites are still there, but I’m just finding that Peter’s storyline is becoming overpowering, and I literally cannot stand the Will-Alicia-Peter triangle of snoredom. This show was EPIC in the beginning because Alicia had no OTP. She was the spurned woman who was doin’ it for herself and making new friends along the way. The lack of manly foil allowed her relationships with other characters, which might not have had that opportunity otherwise, to flourish; for example Cary, Kalinda, Jackie and her kids. Not to mention hottie rogues like that motorbike riding fake!lawyer from early this season. I LOVED that man, they had terrific chemistry. Alicia and Will should have chemistry, but they don’t. I’m sure it’s written on the page, but it’s just not translating to the screen (for me) and it’s really killing my enjoyment of the show. Alicia and Peter have an extremely fascinating relationship, yet they’re turning to dramatics and love-triangles and it begins to feel a bit like overkill. Alicia and her kids had the most gorgeous relationship early in the season, it was refreshingly drama-free, yet entirely believable. That’s now all gone to hell with CONDOMGATE and Becca and all that jazz. It’s horrible, it’s sub-par television and certainly not what I signed up for.

Am I giving up on this show entirely? Of course not, did you see how gay-ly Kalinda’s sitting up there? Alicia and Kalinda continue to have one of the most interesting and unique dynamics on television. But I am disappointed with the direction The Good Wife has taken recently, and wanted to open a discussion to see if I'm missing the mark.

Feel free to try and change my mind, I’d honestly love to get excited about The Good Wife again. I’d also like to note that all the things I’ve listed turning me off TGW (extra dramatics, love triangles, more Bad Husband storylines) will probably garner the show even more ratings.

Kalinda spin-off, anyone??

Oh noes. Oh noes oh noes.

I kind of maybe thought it was coming, but I was still hoping that when this pinged my inbox it'd be another recap. Because I miss them SO HARD.

It's like, I just want to lovingly put my arm around your shoulder and give you a reassuring squeeze and say, "It's season fatigue. They'll be back and they'll be on their game again." Because it's not the acting (though Alan Cumming gtfo with your crazy overacting). That's still ace. It's not the characters - they're still evolving. It's definitely how the writers are shifting their focus. It's the small choices they're making about "okay, what are we focusing on this episode?" And they've moved away from Cary/Alicia/Kalinda/the kids and their mom/Jackie - which, we're agreed, are the stellar dynamics. Rogue lawyer guy I could take or leave. Mostly because I was overly involved watching K and her camera hijinx and dykey car-leaning in that episode.

So just, deep breaths? Hold tight? Write more recaps to appease me? ;) It's times like these when a fan must make their own fun and have some faith that the show will come around. No sharks have been jumped.

And hey, octopus porn OJ killer guy is coming back. Also, Kalinda's boots are like featured in next Tuesday's episode. So many reasons to keep tuning in.
Oh, Lynn! You keep me going, you really do. I think the answer is to definitely have more fun with what the show is giving us. My problem is that I possibly cared too much, got too invested, when I should really just step back and have some fun with it. And, funnily enough, sitting down and writing this actually got me all inspired to pick the episodes apart again. I think I'll just focus more heavily on Kalinda (is that even possible?) and just tralalala during the love triangle bits. I just want Peter and Will to run off together (I swear to god they deserve each other), and leave our ladies alone.

And you're right, maybe it's just the writers exploring their options a bit, and focussing on other characters/trying out different dynamics.

In conclusion... I can't abandon a show that involves dykey car-leaning, no ma'am. I'll be back ;)

Peter/Will = Pill? Weter?

I really don't read male slash, but if someone wrote it....I'd tap that. I think watching their awkward sexual one-upping competition might be somehow therapeutic. And Alicia and Kalinda can just be off somewhere, rocking their superhero capes and boots having sexy spats that end in them combining their powers to defeat evil.

More of a Kalinda focus to the recaps? I will be the first person onboard that awesome train.

yes on both! After all, we pick and choose, right? And as long as there's some Kalinda awesomeness to pick...
And the Peter and Will getaway is a great idea! After all a love triangle has three angles, right? :D
LOL. Yes, yes it does ;)
I literally cannot stand the Will-Alicia-Peter triangle of snoredom.

Just wanted to quote this because I feel EXACTLY the same way. DNW stupid Will angst and the fact that the show has started being marketed as "Will Alicia stay with Peter or follow her heart with Will" is seriously killing my enjoyment too, especially because of all the "ZOMG Will/Alicia OTP" squeeing. But K continues to be the hottest/most gorgeous/most awesome in-house ever, so if your recaps take on a more K-heavy focus, I am all for it. I need a reminder of why I'm still watching this show. Hope you get your groove back! :)
I just hate the way the show is pitching it like she's only got two choices; Will or Peter. Um, how bout neither? How bout we don't measure her worth by which man wants her? Neither of them deserve her. It's such a paint-by-numbers storyline, and not what I expect of this show!

I hope i get my groove back too. This discussion, and seeing that you guys are feeling the same way, is definitely helping :)
Last one, I promise I don't want to take over your livejournal ;) but it's such a relief to actually talk about the show with people who are sick of the way it's been going lately.

Um, how bout neither? How bout we don't measure her worth by which man wants her?

YES!! Everybody's all "are you Team Will or Team Peter?"... uh... I'm "Team Alicia"? WHo says a woman has to be defined by who she ends up with? That's so irritating to see women actually sell that, it makes me want to scream! My inner-outer feminist is having trouble staying polite, I'm telling you!
This show was EPIC in the beginning because Alicia had no OTP. She was the spurned woman who was doin’ it for herself and making new friends along the way.

So much yes! to this. It really does feel like the focus has shifted to the Alicia-Peter-Will triangle of doom and the political intrigue with Peter, which was interesting as a backdrop (especially where it involved Kalinda), but I don't want it to take over the show.

I got interested in TGW because I loved watching Alicia finding her feet at Stern, Lockhart & Gardiner, and becoming a crime fighting duo with Kalinda. I really hope they get back to that soon.
Absolutely. The finding her feet stuff was amazing, and really helped us as an audience to identify with Alicia. I mean, everyone's felt like a fish-out-of-water at some point and it was so fun to be on that journey with her, cheering her on! But all this political intrigue & love triangle dramarama is too soapy to take seriously, and I find myself losing sight of Alicia's motives, which is not what one wants in a tv heroine!

I hope they get back to the crime fighting duo, too. So bad!

I totally agree. The first half of the season was unbelievably good. Heart was one of the worst episodes (the one where Will and Alicia kiss). It's become too soapy - and if I want soap I'll watch Young and the Restless - thank you very much. Kalinda is still my favourite - it's too bad that TPTB are wasting their time on Alicia-Peter-Will triangle. I can't stand Will - he's just too creepy. In fact in a showdown between Peter and Will - I'd take Peter. Don't get me wrong, I'm not crazy about Peter. I don't want Alicia with anyone - I want her to be a strong woman making it on her own (with Kalinda, of course ;-)).
Yes Yes and Yes!! All of this, so much. Will creeps me out, and I'm sure he's not supposed to, they probably think they're making him mysterious in a romantic way, but I just find him shifty. I do not want Alicia with him because I honestly don't think we've seen him show any capacity to care for her and he seems to want her purely out of rivalry with Peter.

I think that a little romance for Alicia some time down the track would have been awesome, but it was the first season and just felt WAY too soon. She'd just come out of a fifteen year marriage, and I was loving watching her navigate this new world of being alone, being a single Mum, becoming the breadwinner and having Jackie at home like a pseudo "wife". Fascinating stuff! We don't get anything on tv like that. Sigh.
Kalinda, Alicia, Cary and all my other favourites are still there, but I’m just finding that Peter’s storyline is becoming overpowering, and I literally cannot stand the Will-Alicia-Peter triangle of snoredom.

Yes, Yes and yes. Unfortunately I agree with you on all counts. I can see the network paws print all over this one. Why have a show that's completely fresh and original if you can have a show that's only partially original mixed with old snoozers like love triangle and soapish storylines? After they were renewed they suddenly shifted focus from Alicia as a new woman to Alicia as the eternal love interest if someone. Wouldn't it be waaaay cooler if she was allowed to grow as herself instead of making her decisions based on one or the other of her two men? Networks like predictable stories, that's what they do best. Why oh why couldn't this show be on cable?

Alicia and Will should have chemistry, but they don’t. I’m sure it’s written on the page, but it’s just not translating to the screen (for me)

Wew. I was starting to think I was bizarre or something. The level of excitement I have witnessed about this pseudo chemistry just had me wondering. There is absolutely nothing there. Hell, Kalinda has more chemistry with Will than Alicia!

Alicia and Peter have an extremely fascinating relationship, yet they’re turning to dramatics and love-triangles and it begins to feel a bit like overkill

Agreed. Because Peter is now not a man seeking redemption so much as a guy trying to prevent the competition from winning. And his campaigning/trial thing is turning into this huge inside spinoff, totally disconnected from the rest of the show. Give the man his own show and leave the Good Wife alone to make her mistakes and have her own storylines, please?

Don't even get me started on the Becca 90210 drama.

Alicia and Kalinda continue to have one of the most interesting and unique dynamics on television.

Thankfully. Let's hope it goes on like that. The Kings seem to be involved into Kalinda as a character enough that I don't think she will go away or dwindle any time soon but with the politics taking over next season, they'd better watch out.

Feel free to try and change my mind, I’d honestly love to get excited about The Good Wife again. I’d also like to note that all the things I’ve listed turning me off TGW (extra dramatics, love triangles, more Bad Husband storylines) will probably garner the show even more ratings.

I'd love to change your mind but I'm in the same predicament. I'm crossing my fingers that things don't deteriorate any further and that the upcoming season finale was the reason for all the love triangle and Peter plot increase. Things could calm down next season after they've had their bloody cliffhanger. Who knows?
In any case, the love triangle episodes have not made miracles in the ratings. Heart (the big Kiss episode) was one of the lowest rated in the season and last week's too and yet they promoted the hell out of the love angle so I don't know if people are that interested in it as a whole.

But you know what? i'm not even sure the network pushes it to get ratings. They just think it makes nice tv and it helps with the promos.
Hehe, I'm SO glad there are a bunch of us out there who feel this way! And that's super interesting about the ratings, I didn't know that! I have a few friends that are also suffering Good Wife fatigue, so hopefully this'll filter back to the Kings and they'll get their show back on track! But I ain't hopeful, since the internet's a mindfield of "ALICIA SHOULD CHOOSE WILL" "NO, CHRIS NOTH IS A HOTTIE, SHE SHOULD CHOOSE PETER" ughhhhhh.

I like your theory that the shift in plot is just a build up to the season finale. But then why have they hired Alan Cumming for next season?? I love him to bits, but I don't see how his character will fit in full-time. I reckon they should just make a spin off, The Bad Husband, and take Peter and all his political maneuverings over there.
But I ain't hopeful, since the internet's a mindfield of "ALICIA SHOULD CHOOSE WILL" "NO, CHRIS NOTH IS A HOTTIE, SHE SHOULD CHOOSE PETER" ughhhhhh.

Tell me about it. Over at FanForum, that's all they talk about! I'm having the hardest time trying to steer the conversation away from the love triangle pit, even when it's about 5 mn in an episode. "Um... so what did you guys think about the actual story?" ;) I swear they'd rather spend 5 pages speculating about whether Alicia will choose Peter or Will in the next 3 episodes than what actually happened in the actual episodes.

I like your theory that the shift in plot is just a build up to the season finale. But then why have they hired Alan Cumming for next season?? I love him to bits, but I don't see how his character will fit in full-time.

I think they're going to get Alicia more involved with the campaign to create some inner conflict so it'll come back to her view of it at least. When you look at the beginning of the season, there was some Peter too, it just didn't need to be the whole show to exist so my hopes is that they'll go back to some sort of a balance. Besides Cumming becoming a regular is also about contractual obligations. They wanted him in the show and he was signed to be on Broadway in the Spiderman musical so they had to move fast to keep him on. It's also probably a lot cheaper to get him 'full time' than on an episode basis if they want to have him in more than say 6-7 episodes. It doesn't mean he's going to be in every single episode. Baranski and Czuchry are regulars too and they hardly take over the show these days. It could be just wishful thinking. We'll see.
My love for the show started gradually dwindling the moment they began hinting at the inevitable Alicia/Will hook-up. I HATE THAT STORYLINE WITH PASSION. And no, it's not because I'm a hardcore femslasher, but because there is absolutely no chemistry between those two. Absolutely none. Zip. Nada.

What I do love about this show, though, and what I think they do right, is that everything always comes back to Alicia. She's the true protagonist of the show, which is wonderful. But the recent storyline choices have been downright awful, to say the least.
And no, it's not because I'm a hardcore femslasher, but because there is absolutely no chemistry between those two. Absolutely none. Zip. Nada.

In fact it probably IS because you're a femslasher... the only people I see who are actually believing in this chemistry thing are female viewers overcome by their hormones. They so want to see it, they make it up in their heads.
Seriously, she had more chemistry with the biker lawyer dude!

Ha, good point. That's really what annoys me with het!parings; people automatically assume that there ought to be a het paring (and, well, the writers are definitely responsible as well) in a show, which eight times out of ten brings about ships that have absolutely no chemistry.
